Poems and correspondence [manuscript]. 1972-1981.

The collection consists of drafts of poems, most of which have been published, and some correspondence relating to Peter Porter's poetry writing. These consists of: Four notebooks containing hand written drafts of some 200 poems, written between 1955-1960. Some titles in these notebooks are 'We don't want to lose you but we think you ought to go', 'Praying no end', 'No liar am I'. Some of these poems appear not to have been published. Drafts of the following published works: Living in a calm country 1975; The cost of seriousness 1978; English subtitles 1981. The galley proofs of The cost of seriousness and the publishers page-proofs of the following titles, are also included: The last of England 1970; Preaching to the convert 1972; After martial 1972; The cost of seriousness; English subtitles. Some proofs of The lady and the unicorn (Secker & Warburg, 1975) are in the collection. There is also a small group of loose-leaf handwritten poems.

Porter is a Brisbane-born poet and writer. In 1951 he moved permanently to England where he has worked as a bookseller, journalist, clerk, advertising copywriter and freelance writer reviewing for journals including the New statesman, London magazine, The observer, Times literary supplement, Encounter and the New review. He is the author of numerous volumes of poetry and three radio plays, broadcast by the BBC. He was Writer-in-Residence at Sydney University in 1975 and at New England University...
